Starter spins but is not engaging or is clashing with the flywheel ring Bendix drive or ring gear issue/problem. Starter Motor wizzing but not engaging? its probably the bendix on the starter motor. The point being, the starter is really very new and has not been used much at all. If the starter is engaging too hard, install shims at the mounting point. Grinding sound: you hear it spinning like normally it should, but it comes with a grinding sound like sprockets not engaging correctly: worn out bendix ("sprocket" that engages the flywheel), and/or the flywheel (replace). If all looks well there you don't have much choice but pull the flywheel and remove the Bendix. It whirls, spins, or whatever, but the PWC does not turn over. So the solenoid works, its drawing current, and the starter gear is engaging the flywheel. If the starter spins but the motor does not, the bendix may not be engaging fully. The bendix gear consists of a one-way bearing that extends the teeth that engage the starter crown. Tried turning engine at crank but would not move. On the 400s the bendix is not part of the starter. It would just click and then nothing, like it wasn't making a connection.
